Holly Amelia

Holly Amelia’s work explores the tension between aesthetic and topic, using anatomical subject matter in combination with ornamental design and pattern.

She says “Themes of death and the transience of life are recurring themes throughout art history and continue still in the leading contemporary art of today. Inspired by this, my work fuses traditional and modern influences to create highly detailed drawings, which challenge the conventions of what is normally thought to be appealing to the eye. Whilst mortality and surgical imagery often prove unsettling, my artwork contests this idea; creating striking compositions that both masks the initial themes and accentuates them at the same time.”

The impermanence and delicacy of the materials that I use further accentuate the uncertain and ephemeral nature of life. Paper; like the body, ages and decays over time, therefore, giving the art a fleeting moment of life.
