Deck the Halls: DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS Film Screening
09/12/2022 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
FreePart of Conclave’s special week of events for DECK THE HALLS celebrating the archetypal symbol of urban street and youth culture: THE SKATEBOARD.
Alongside a group show from local artists showing their original artworks created on the humble skateboard deck, we are screening the full-length feature film DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS
ABOUT THE FILM:
Dogtown and Z-Boys is a 2001 documentary film directed by Stacy Peralta. The documentary explores the pioneering Zephyr skateboard team in the 1970s (of which Peralta was a member) and the evolving sport of skateboarding. Using a mix of film shot in the 1970s by Craig Stecyk of the Zephyr skateboard team (the Z-Boys of the title) alongside contemporary interviews, the documentary tells the story of a group of teenage surfer/skateboarders and their influence on the history of skateboarding culture.
Narrated by Sean Penn, the film begins with the history of skateboarding in Southern California and how it was strongly influenced by the surf culture in the surrounding areas of Santa Monica and Venice; an area nicknamed Dogtown. Surf shop owners Jeff Ho, Skip Engblom, and Craig Stecyk established the Zephyr Skateboard Team with local teenagers from broken homes. The sport of skateboarding continued to evolve as the Z-Boys introduced moves influenced by surfing. During one of California’s record-breaking droughts, local backyard pools were emptied and became hotspots for these young skateboarders looking for places to skateboard.
Beautifully filmed and edited, DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS won 7 awards, including Best Director and Audience Choice at The Sundance Film Festival in 2001 (and was nominated for a further 6) so this really is a cinematic treat to catch up on!
