SUMMARY:Disorientation & [f]LOSS - Private View
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Private View launch party of our final exhibition in the basements events space at Conclave Brighton’s Queens Road site. \nDISORIENTATION & [f]LOSS:\nA site-specific installation by Sukey Booth \nThis new immersive\, site-specific (and time-specific) art installation contemplates issues of cultural identity and belonging in relation to location\, migration\, shared histories and circumstance. \nRecognising the complex world where many of us (whether subconsciously\, or otherwise) self-edit much of our messy social histories of heritage and identity\, this work will seek to illustrate the intricacies of individuality that are collected together to make up our communities and networks. \nPersonal identity was never just one thing; a web of inter-locking stories\, genetics\, histories and influences come together in every human narrative. These tangled webs are made up of many strands: some with obvious beginning and end points\, and some that unravel themselves into infinity… \nClocktower & Queens Road\, Brighton\, 1900 / Clocktower & Queens Road\, Hong Kong\, 1875\nIn Disorientation & [f]loss\, the artist invites us into a confusing world where we attempt to follow those different strands\, where the start and end of linear narrative is unclear. Caught up in a mile of gold and red threads\, the remnants and evidence of genetics\, travel\, experiences and memories reveal themselves to the viewer as they explore the space. We are invited to consider the different ways we transform\, evolve and develop: be that physically – travelling over continents – or in time\, circumstance and social identity. \nThe historical and nostalgic is grounded against the current day and current location through integral references to the space: sited in a Victorian building in central Brighton\, this work tells multiple stories of circumstances and coincidence: “In the particular is contained the universal.” (James Joyce) \nComprising installation\, sculptures\, print\, “reliquaries”\, text and projection\, the multi-channel nature of personal identity and experience is reflected in the physicality of this work\, and as a farewell to this particular gallery space before its permanent closure on 16th September. \nFREE ENTRY \nLicenced bar\n(all under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times) \nPRIVATE VIEW TIMES:\nFriday 1st September 6-9pm\nFREE ENTRY\, TICKETS ADVISED – (to secure a space\, please book a ticket via Eventbrite here) \nMAIN EXHIBITION OPEN:\n2nd – 16th Sept (more info on opening times and days here)

SUMMARY:BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: There's Another Country
DESCRIPTION:Black Tiger Productions presents\nTHERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY\nA film by Martin Nichols (+Q&A) \n“Climb aboard a Robin Reliant & join my dad & me\, W. Shakespeare & Dr Freud on a mission to save the UK from itself – in Super 8!” \n \nA screening combined with a Q&A of a new movie by local filmmaker Martin Nichols. This deeply personal film looks at post-Brexit UK through the eyes of Martin’s father\, Evan. He was a private in World War Two and enthusiastically voted for the transformational 1945 Labour government – a government that gave us the NHS\, decent social housing and so much more. THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY asks a very simple question: what would Evan make of his country today? \nNichols’ multi-genre film uses both found and newly shot Super 8 footage – which replicates the visual ‘look’ of the post-war consensus. It weaves two huge social upheavals together: our present-day experience of the pandemic and his parents’ generation’s suffering in the war. In seeking to understand the roots of both his own family’s breakdown as well as recent political storms in the nation as a whole\, THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY finally travels back in time to revisit Evan’s home town Senghenydd in South Wales. This was the site in 1913 of the biggest – and almost entirely forgotten – industrial disaster ever to happen in the UK. \nWhat are the ghosts that haunt us? And how can we exorcise them? Can we find the confidence to build another country again\, just as the Attlee government started to do in 1945? There will be a discussion after the screening in which we can hopefully sort everything out… \n“Fantastic\, a really clever collage of the personal and political\, and the parallel narrative threads ran deep and hit home hard. An important and highly original film.” (Melita Dennett\, Radio Reverb) \n \nTICKETS REQUIRED\n£10\n2 Performances: \n\nWed 17th May 19:30-21:45\nFri 19th May 19:30-21:45\n\nThere will be a short intermission between the film screening and the Q&A. \nUnallocated seating\nTickets available from the Brighton Fringe Festival website. \n\nSUITABLE FOR AGES 12+ \n\nANY QUERIES ABOUT THE VENUE? Please contact us on gallery@conclave-brighton.co.uk\n\n\n\nABOUT THE VENUE:\nThis show will take place in the Conclave Events Space\, located in the basement of CONCLAVE GALLERY\, 9 Queens Road\, Brighton\, BN1 3WA.\nNB. SUMMARY:Deck the Halls: DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Part of Conclave’s special week of events for DECK THE HALLS celebrating the archetypal symbol of urban street and youth culture: THE SKATEBOARD. \nAlongside a group show from local artists showing their original artworks created on the humble skateboard deck\, we are screening the full-length feature film DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS \n\nABOUT THE FILM:\nDogtown and Z-Boys is a 2001 documentary film directed by Stacy Peralta. The documentary explores the pioneering Zephyr skateboard team in the 1970s (of which Peralta was a member) and the evolving sport of skateboarding. Using a mix of film shot in the 1970s by Craig Stecyk of the Zephyr skateboard team (the Z-Boys of the title) alongside contemporary interviews\, the documentary tells the story of a group of teenage surfer/skateboarders and their influence on the history of skateboarding culture. \nNarrated by Sean Penn\, the film begins with the history of skateboarding in Southern California and how it was strongly influenced by the surf culture in the surrounding areas of Santa Monica and Venice; an area nicknamed Dogtown. Surf shop owners Jeff Ho\, Skip Engblom\, and Craig Stecyk established the Zephyr Skateboard Team with local teenagers from broken homes. The sport of skateboarding continued to evolve as the Z-Boys introduced moves influenced by surfing. During one of California’s record-breaking droughts\, local backyard pools were emptied and became hotspots for these young skateboarders looking for places to skateboard. \nBeautifully filmed and edited\, DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS won 7 awards\, including Best Director and Audience Choice at The Sundance Film Festival in 2001 (and was nominated for a further 6) so this really is a cinematic treat to catch up on! \n  \n \nRunning time: 91 minutes\nBBFC Rating: 15 (suitable for audiences aged 15 years and over) \nFriday 9th December\, 18:30-21:30 \nENTRY IS FREE BUT SPACES ARE STRICTLY LIMITED \nYou can reserve a space by booking a ticket via Eventbrite here\, however after 7pm\, all seats and spaces will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis (so please arrive early to avoid disappointment!) \nFriday 9th December 2022: \n\nDoors: 18:30\nFilm: 19:45-21.30\nVenue & Bar closes: 22:00\n\nAge Restriction:\n15 and over (under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult) \n– FULLY LICENSED ONSITE BAR –

SUMMARY:Fluoro-Doodle-Decks: Skateboard Art Workshop (with Barrie J Davies)
DESCRIPTION:Part of Conclave’s special week of events for DECK THE HALLS celebrating the archetypal symbol of urban street and youth culture: THE SKATEBOARD. \nAlongside a group show from local artists showing their original (and limited-edition) artworks created on the humble skateboard deck\, we are hosting a hands-on FLUORO DOODLE creative evening workshop in our basement events space in central Brighton (under the main gallery). This will be a fun\, sociable\, and hands-on creative event where you can get inspired\, and get your hands on the decks… \nWe’ll give you the deck\, and get doodling with… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 7th December\, 18:30-21:30 \nOur “Creative Deckmaster” for the night is Barrie J Davies\, a Brighton-based urban contemporary pop artist. He makes fun paintings\, prints and sculptures that have found their way into private and public collections nationally and worldwide. You can find out more about Barrie here. \nHe will help you find your inner master doodler\, whilst giving you practical help\, advice and inspiration to get you leaving the workshop with a fully-fledged\, fluoro skate deck. We’ll be cracking open the paints\, pens\, spray-paints\, stencils (and SMILES!) and you’ll be able to try different media and techniques on your own deck. Ask for help\, or just crack-on with it over a drink or two (yes\, there’s a bar!  🍺🥂🍹) \n \nThere are no rights or wrongs for this workshop – the only rule is to get involved and give it a go! Whether you’re a master draughtsman\, or a complete beginner\, we’ll get you trying out different doodle media\, from pens and paintbrushes\, to spray-paints and stencils. He works mainly with analogue collage where he blends his playful humour with his love of history\, science\, nature and symbolism to create striking\, yet simple\, artworks. You can find out more about Twydall here. \nHe will help you find your inner master collager\, whilst giving you practical help\, advice\, ideas and inspiration to get you leaving the workshop with a fully-fledged\, beautiful skate deck. We’ll have oodles and oodles of vintage collage materials (helpfully sorted into categories so you can find what you need\, when you need it! Ask for help\, or just crack-on with it over a drink or two (yes\, there’s a bar!  🍺🥂🍹) Come by yourself\, or come with friends – we’ll all enjoy a good natter over the paper snipping 🙂 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop will provide a creative lovely break from all the Christmas eating and drinking – come in enjoy the escape from all the over-the-top Christmas themed stuff! (Although if you do need a Christmas excuse\, this will be THE PLACE to make a bespoke present for someone special). \nThere are no rights or wrongs for this workshop – the only rule is to get involved and give it a go! Whether you’re a sticking pro\, or a complete beginner\, we’ll get you trying out different techniques\, and thinking about how to use different types of source material to create the effects you’re after. Twydall will be helping you along with hints and tips to create a unique skate deck that tells a story (and the gallery upstairs is on hand to provide any extra inspiration you might need). \nThere will be vintage stuff. Lots of vintage… \nWe’ll be focussing on using vintage print materials to create your collage skate deck\, but there will also be lots of other materials on hand to ensure you can create the effects you want to achieve with your decks.
