SUMMARY:Disorientation & [f]LOSS - Private View
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Private View launch party of our final exhibition in the basements events space at Conclave Brighton’s Queens Road site. \nDISORIENTATION & [f]LOSS:\nA site-specific installation by Sukey Booth \nThis new immersive\, site-specific (and time-specific) art installation contemplates issues of cultural identity and belonging in relation to location\, migration\, shared histories and circumstance. \nRecognising the complex world where many of us (whether subconsciously\, or otherwise) self-edit much of our messy social histories of heritage and identity\, this work will seek to illustrate the intricacies of individuality that are collected together to make up our communities and networks. \nPersonal identity was never just one thing; a web of inter-locking stories\, genetics\, histories and influences come together in every human narrative. These tangled webs are made up of many strands: some with obvious beginning and end points\, and some that unravel themselves into infinity… \nClocktower & Queens Road\, Brighton\, 1900 / Clocktower & Queens Road\, Hong Kong\, 1875\nIn Disorientation & [f]loss\, the artist invites us into a confusing world where we attempt to follow those different strands\, where the start and end of linear narrative is unclear. Caught up in a mile of gold and red threads\, the remnants and evidence of genetics\, travel\, experiences and memories reveal themselves to the viewer as they explore the space. We are invited to consider the different ways we transform\, evolve and develop: be that physically – travelling over continents – or in time\, circumstance and social identity. \nThe historical and nostalgic is grounded against the current day and current location through integral references to the space: sited in a Victorian building in central Brighton\, this work tells multiple stories of circumstances and coincidence: “In the particular is contained the universal.” (James Joyce) \nComprising installation\, sculptures\, print\, “reliquaries”\, text and projection\, the multi-channel nature of personal identity and experience is reflected in the physicality of this work\, and as a farewell to this particular gallery space before its permanent closure on 16th September. \nFREE ENTRY \nLicenced bar\n(all under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times) \nPRIVATE VIEW TIMES:\nFriday 1st September 6-9pm\nFREE ENTRY\, TICKETS ADVISED – (to secure a space\, please book a ticket via Eventbrite here) \nMAIN EXHIBITION OPEN:\n2nd – 16th Sept (more info on opening times and days here)

SUMMARY:Conclave Presents: PERSUASION (Billy Chainsaw & Girl Shit)
DESCRIPTION:PERSUASION brings together the work of BILLY CHAINSAW and GIRL SHIT: two artists who share a love of 20th Century subcultures and their visual iconography. \nPERSUASION is often the currency of creatives and those who seek the “other” in a bid to suggest what lies between the gaps in the world. It is also something that free thinking often works against in the seeking of truths. \nIn their separate – but complementary – ways\, these artists examine the contradictions and hypocrisy within mainstream society that these subcultures have brought to light\, and the pervasive impact that dangerous unchallenged authority can have on us all as individuals. \n\n\n\n\nGirl Shit is a fine artist exploring propaganda\, subculture and female narrative magick. \nHer work moves fluidly through painting\, sculpture\, installation\, drawing\, printmaking\, and artist merch; asking questions and exploring alternate possibilities. \nFor this show Girl Shit is showing a series of original collage works and an installation featuring a selection of works from the “ASTRAL TRAVEL LUGGAGE Co.” \nInstagram: @girlshitgirl \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBilly Chainsaw is an internationally collected\, British\, contemporary Dark Pop Artist\, whose work uses a fertile mix of pulp and the arcane to engage with ideas of mortality\, magick and sensuality. \n1960s bogeyman\, Charles Manson\, is one of the most recognisable faces of the 20th century. Through his latest artworks in this show\, Billy Chainsaw shines a transformative light on the quintessential antihero and presents him as a Pop Art Idol. \nChainsaw says: “my intention isn’t to glamorise violence\, but to depict that it’s possible to discover beauty in the badness.“ \nWebsite: koolkrakenincorporated.com / Instagram: @billychainsawhoulston \n\n\n\n\n  \nOPENING TIMES:\nSaturday 15th July: 10am – 6pm\nSunday 16th July: 11am – 5pm\nSaturday 22nd July: 10am – 6pm\nSunday 23rd July: 11am – 5pm\nFREE ENTRY\, NO TICKETS REQUIRED \nPRIVATE VIEW LAUNCH PARTY: Friday 14th July\, 6-9pm \nPlease Note: this exhibition contains nudity\, and some subjects that may be not suitable for younger viewers. Recommended 18+. Please exercise discretion\, and feel free to ask us if you have any questions – contact us by email with any queries.

SUMMARY:CONCLAVE PRESENTS: Chainsaw & The Girl: Hell-raisers
DESCRIPTION:Conclave presents\nCHAINSAW & THE GIRL\nHell-Raisers\n27th August – 4th September 2022\nChainsaw & THE GIRL is an ongoing collaboration between artists BILLY CHAINSAW and GIRL SH*T\, one that explores their shared love of MUSIC\, SUBCULTURE and MAGICK. For their latest show HELL-RAISERS they deliver both solo and collaborative artworks that embrace the incendiary nature of limitless\, boundary pushing individuals. \n\n\n\n\nCHAINSAW says:\n“The original wave of punk rock changed my life\, empowered and transformed me into a tenacious individual able to pursue my dreams and become all the things I’d ever dreamt of becoming (and more): personal assistant to Siouxsie and The Banshees from 1979-1996\, journalist\, film critic\, adult-magazine editor\, actor\, experimental filmmaker\, club MC\, singer\, and dark pop artist. Now felt the optimum time to delve into that inspirational aspect of my past. I was able to do so thanks to a friend from 1978\, Ray Stevenson\, the first photographer to document punk rock in the UK – particularly the hell-raising Sex Pistols. Ray generously allowed me access to his archives and granted me permission to create artworks using his photos.”\n\n\n\nGIRL SH*T says:\n“My interest in the notion of ‘Hell Raisers’ is seeped in subculture and popular culture. What is a ‘Hell Raiser’? Here’s where it gets interesting. At the core it’s about complete freedom\, to be without personal boundaries or censorship. Like the perception of the ‘Rock God’\, the ‘Hell Raiser’ is generally a man. Envied for his freedom and celebrated for his virility dressed as bad behaviour. Women are usually punished for similar traits yet our history is crammed full of revolutionary women looking for the same freedoms. In this work I seek to celebrate these women… they are all of us…”\n\n\n\nARTIST STATEMENTS \nBILLY CHAINSAW: “In my early teens I developed an obsession with American comic books\, masks\, the movies\, magick\, and author William S. Burroughs… elements that repeatedly feature in my mixed-media\, cut up dark pop art.” \nTHE GIRL (aka GIRL SH*T): “Girl Sh*t is informed by a love of subcultures\, music\, ’zines\, gig posters\, fashion\, art\, design and punk feminism.” \n  \nOPENING TIMES: \n\nSaturday 27th August:  10-6\nSunday 28th August:  11-5\nMonday 29th August (bank holiday): 12-6\nTuesday 30th August:  12-6\nWednesday 31st August: 12-6\nThursday 1st September:  10-6\nFriday 2nd September: 10-6\nSaturday 3rd September:  10-6\nSunday 4th September:  11-5\n\nFREE ENTRY \nThis exhibition contains sensitive material which may not be suitable for some viewers. Please use your discretion\, and feel free to ask before entering if unsure. \nEntrance is 18+ unless accompanied by a responsible adult.

SUMMARY:CONCLAVE PRESENTS Michael Panteli's Malice in Underland
DESCRIPTION:Panteli started his art career as a cartoonist with former UK cult comics Zit and Smut. \nHe is a long-time collaborator with the legendary underground cartoonist\, Robert Crumb\, and they have been creating joint works of art via the postal system since 2003. \nHis influences are golden-age (“pre-code”) comic covers from the 1930s-50s\, wartime propaganda posters\, art deco advertising\, the underground comix scene of the late 60s/early 70s\, and vintage product packaging and billboards. \nHis works generally start in acrylic\, ink\, and pencil\, with a simple message accompanying a striking image (much like wartime propaganda posters of years gone by.) Many of his works subvert well-known and iconic posters from yesteryear\, while others deal with issues that many find uncomfortable to talk about. \nMALICE IN UNDERLAND: Underground art in the underground gallery \nIn Panteli’s first UK solo show in over 10 years\, he presents more than 100 works\, created between 2003 and 2022. Ranging from the subtle to the extreme\, every work has a message (whether that’s for the viewer\, their friends\, their enemies\, or their governments). Whether you embrace the obscene or are outraged by the works\, we guarantee you will have a response to this show! \nSocial Media culture\, right-wing personalities\, powerful organisations of all ilks\, contradictions\, toxic masculinity\, violence\, and bigotry are all in the firing line\, and Panteli’s weapons are humour and filthy language\, together with his trusty pens and pencils. \nThis show includes several collaborative works made with Robert Crumb\, never before displayed in the UK. \nDuring the show\, original works and limited-edition works will be available to purchase\, with further limited-edition prints available to order. Panteli’s comics and wallet-friendly merch will also be up for grabs. Panteli will be showing at ComicCon in May 2022\, so this is a unique chance to get in there early and snap up a unique piece before they’re all gone. \nThis show is suitable for 18+ only.\nPlease be aware that this exhibition contains STRONG ADULT CONTENT which is not suitable for younger viewers\, and some people may find some content offensive. Works may contain sexual references\, sexual swear words\, references to violence\, drug use\, and mental health conditions. Please use your discretion as to whether this exhibition is right for you! If you would like further pre-visit information and advice on the content\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via email. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOPENING TIMES:\n \n\nSaturday 5th March  10-6\nSunday 6th March:  11-5\nTuesday 8th March: 12-6\nWednesday 9th March: 12-6\nThursday 10th March: 10-6\nFriday 11th March: 10-6\nSaturday 12th March: 10-6\nSunday 13th March: 11-5\n\nFREE ENTRY\n\nTo see or buy artworks by Michael Panteli from our current (and previous) group shows at Conclave\, please head over to his artist page here.

SUMMARY:A.Pozas: Bright Roots in Brighton
DESCRIPTION:A.Pozas is a Spanish artist\, now based in Brighton\, whose street artworks are well known in the city. His works are often social commentary on the diversity and complexity of identity\, using his distinctive sense of humour and aesthetic style. \nFor his solo show at Conclave Brighton\, he presents new\, affordable works in a variety of media\, but with a focus on his new Alhambra tiles motif – a reflection and musing on the brightness\, diversity and possibility within us all\, but that which is so often masked and overwhelmed by the constraints (and restraints) of institutional attitudes in today’s world. \n\n \n\n More information to follow! \n\nOPENING HOURS:\nSat 14th Dec:   10-6\nSun 15th Dec:   11-5\nMon 16th Dec:  CLOSED\nTues 17th Dec:   12-6\nWed 18th Dec: 12-6\nThu 19th Dec: 10-8\nFri 20th Dec: 10-6\nSat 21st Dec: 10-6\nSun 22nd Dec: 11-5\nMon 23rd Dec: 12-6\nTues 24th Dec: 10-4\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\nSee more of A.Pozas’s work here.

SUMMARY:Barrie J Davies' Artworld
DESCRIPTION:Barrie J Davies is an Artist! \n \nHis artwork is an exotic cocktail of graffiti\, street\, graphic and pop art. He graduated from the Southampton Institute with a Fine Art degree in 2000 and completed his Master’s Degree at the University of Wales Institute\, Cardiff in 2004. He now lives and works in sunny Brighton where he works from his studio in the wonderful Brighton Lanes. \nHis artwork is inspired by social media\, graffiti\, consumerism\, pop culture and the urban life in which he lives. The materials he uses to make his artwork are a mix of acrylic\, household paints\, spray paint\, glitter\, screen printing\, markers\, and mixed media collages of comic books\, digital prints and found objects. \nHis street-art inspired subversive pop-art works are a fun\, colourful psychedelic and humorous approach exposing the human condition: notions of success\, money\, glamour\, love\, death\, sex\, gender and religion are picked at with dry\, comedic use of tragedy meshed with absurdity. \nHis work is in many public and private collections worldwide (and is also owned by Noel Fielding and Norman Cook\, aka Fatboy Slim!) \nFor his solo show at CONCLAVE BRIGHTON (basement space) Barrie will be showcasing a series of affordable paintings\, mixed media and print works\, and launching of his new limited-edition book “Barrie J Davies is an Artist”.  \nMore information to follow! \nSee more of Barrie’s work here. \n\nEXHIBITION OPENING TIMES: \nFri 11 Oct (LAUNCH PARTY)   5-8pm\nSat 12 Oct: 10am-6pm\nSun 13 Oct: 11am-5pm\nMon 14 Oct: CLOSED\nTue 15 Oct: 12-6pm\nWed 16 Oct: 12-6pm\nThu 17 Oct: 10am-6pm\nFri 18 Oct: 10am-6pm\nSat 19 Oct: 10am-6pm\nSun 20 Oct: 11am-5pm \n\n

SUMMARY:Xerox FLASH!
DESCRIPTION:Xerox Flash!\n07-22 September 2019 \n\nCelebrating 60 years of paper jams\, toner spills and emphatically slamming the drawers\, Conclave presents a selected group show of limited-edition and unique\, one-off “Xerox Art” works in this intriguing and super-affordable medium.\nAll works will be available to purchase for £20. \n\nOn September 16th\, 1959\, Xerox Corporation launched the Xerox 914\, demo-ing it in a live TV broadcast. The 914 was the first-ever automatic photocopier and it revolutionised the copying industry\, eventually finding its way into hundreds of thousands of offices across the world. \nNow\, as we approach its 60th birthday\, the photocopier is often seen as a vintage throwback device in the modern office – used only by the company dinosaurs (and their long-suffering PAs…) and as the thing to be going wrong when the printer hasn’t already done so that week…. \nBUT\, it has a very distinct aesthetic quality; a quality which is inherently lo-fi and lo-tech\, and – in this digital age – lets the user connect to an unusually mechanical and analogue experience\, involving static electricity\, direct light sensitivity\, dusty inks\, hot\, curly paper\, and that unique and comforting smell! \nArtists have always been at the forefront of using\, misusing\, manipulating and appropriating new technologies\, and the birth of the photocopier was no different. Although early adopters experimented with the medium of Xerox Art (or “electrostatic art”\, “xerography” or “copy art”) in the 1960s\, it gained momentum after the launch of the Xerox 914\, seeing popularity rise in the 1970s\, and by the 1980s had established itself as a leading medium for accessible\, contemporary art. \nFashions may come and go\, but the beauty\, immediacy and accessibility of Xerox Art still feels very relevant (if not more so) today. \nWatch the wonderfully vintage 1959 launch presentation advert here. \n  \n\n** FREE ENTRY ** \nOpening Hours:\nTues/Weds: 12-6pm\nThurs/Fri/Sat: 10am-6pm\nSun: 11am-5pm\nMondays: closed (Bank holidays 12-6) \nABOUT THE VENUE:\nThis exhibition will take place in the Conclave Events Space\, located in the basement of CONCLAVE GALLERY\, 9 Queens Road\, Brighton\, BN1 3WA.\nNB. The space is accessed via the main\, ground-floor gallery\, and then down a flight of 14 stairs; there is no lift available\, sorry!
