GraphicExistence
GraphicExistence is the work of Marl, a Brighton-based artist specialising in ink and watercolour abstract paintings.
His works are a careful balance of detailed, textural mark-making and fluid, translucent fields that utilise a limited, muted colour palette to create an overall image.
Caught between the extremes of obsessive repetition and chaotic accident, his works are mesmerising, fascinating and hypnotic visions of scenes that slowly come into view as you are drawn into them – a staged and constructed pareidolia on paper.
He is fascinated by the lightness and luminosity that ink and watercolours provide – the subtle and sensitive approach that is required to successfully harness these media. Whilst this is essentially an incremental, staged process of tiny additions, he also sees his practice as drawing out an image awaiting discovery:
“I allow the water and ink to take its course, and take advantage of accident and chance. This way the final image can surprise me, as if I have simply divined it. It was there all along, I just excavate it…”
