Josef Cabey

Josef is a Brighton-based, mixed-media fine artist and illustrator.

His art has been described as a body of work which is often quirky, decorative and highly colourful, but that often contains an undercurrent that disturbs the joke, hinting at deeper themes.

His work is concerned with human relationships framed by his own personal identity, his childhood and the black LGBTQ experience.

He uses outlines, textures, cut-out figures, and often animals serving as metaphor for human conditions. These core elements mingle with additional influences, from a fascination with stained glass windows to 1970s-80s underground New York club culture.

With an initial background in illustration and graphic design, his digital works provide a more immediate outlet for his extensive creative concerns.

Alongside his digital illustration practice, he continues his fine-art painting-based practice, and has exhibited extensively in galleries around the UK, with international collectors as far afield as Japan, Singapore, Australia, Italy and the USA.
