Lady Sculptura

Lady Sculptura is a Brighton-based artist who uses vintage magazines from the 1930s to 1960s to create surreal collages that ask questions – mostly centring on themes of feminism, distorting the mundane, absurdism, and sometimes just the pure silly…

She is fascinated by the liminal relationship between word and image, and in her works you will see text and image combine to produce new, subversive messages; her work gives new and unexpected purposes to commercial images originally used promote a now outdated narrative.

She is inspired by the work of female surrealists such as Leonora Carrington and Meret Oppenheim, and those who encourage us to interact with novel, sometimes absurd, scenarios that sometimes result in feelings of discomfort and confusion.

She says:

My collages bring together vintage images of women cooking, beautifying, homemaking, child-rearing, and place them in modern, sometimes absurd, contexts. What exactly is expected of women nowadays? Can we really have everything – the child, the house, the career?

Although I am not proposing that my collages will revolutionise society with ground-breaking feminist thought, I hope to prompt a glimmer of recognition!
