This work is part of the “E/W Rituals” series. E/W having two meanings here: East-West, and Each Way (used in betting terms), both of which feel like apt elements of my own ethnic and cultural heritage.
The Moon Festival is a big annual event in traditional Chinese culture and falls on the full moon closest to the Autumn Equinox (in 2024 it falls on September 17th). In Western traditions, the same event is known as The Harvest Moon. These lunar events are celebrated both in the East and West, albeit in very different ways.
The figures shown in the “Moon Festival” works are silhouettes representing male/female, my parents, my heritage: the silhouette bodies hold vintage (contemporaneous) maps of the areas that my parents first lived in: Hong Kong island, and Gidea Park (East London)
Much of the paper collage is blank vintage notebook/school-book paper, representing the ongoing opportunities that I (and we all) have to learn about, and decode what it is that makes us what we are – does anyone ever really know where they “are really from”…?
Numbers III and IV in the series use fabrics – one is a tweed labelled as “100% Pure English Wool”, the other is a traditional Chinese Satin Brocade: the fabric of our own inner matter, or the fabric we show as “outer”?
This work was first shown in a group show exhibition at Brighton Rocks in September 2024.
