STICK IT ON! Vintage Collage Skateboard Art Workshop (with Twydall P)

Part of Conclave’s special week of events for DECK THE HALLS celebrating the archetypal symbol of urban street and youth culture: THE SKATEBOARD.

Alongside a group show from local artists showing their original (and limited-edition) artworks created on the humble skateboard deck, we are hosting a hands-on VINTAGE COLLAGE creative evening workshop in our basement events space in central Brighton (under the main gallery). This will be a fun, sociable, and hands-on creative event where you can get inspired, get stuck in, and get your hands on the decks…

STICK IT ON! Vintage Collage Skateboard Art Workshop (with Twydall P)

Tuesday 6th December, 18:30-21:30

Our “Creative Deckmaster” for the night is Twydall P, a Brighton-based mixed-media artist, puppeteer and poet. He works mainly with analogue collage where he blends his playful humour with his love of history, science, nature and symbolism to create striking, yet simple, artworks. You can find out more about Twydall here.

He will help you find your inner master collager, whilst giving you practical help, advice, ideas and inspiration to get you leaving the workshop with a fully-fledged, beautiful skate deck. We’ll have oodles and oodles of vintage collage materials (helpfully sorted into categories so you can find what you need, when you need it! Ask for help, or just crack-on with it over a drink or two (yes, there’s a bar!  🍺🥂🍹) Come by yourself, or come with friends – we’ll all enjoy a good natter over the paper snipping 🙂

This workshop will provide a creative lovely break from all the Christmas eating and drinking – come in enjoy the escape from all the over-the-top Christmas themed stuff! (Although if you do need a Christmas excuse, this will be THE PLACE to make a bespoke present for someone special).

There are no rights or wrongs for this workshop – the only rule is to get involved and give it a go! Whether you’re a sticking pro, or a complete beginner, we’ll get you trying out different techniques, and thinking about how to use different types of source material to create the effects you’re after. Twydall will be helping you along with hints and tips to create a unique skate deck that tells a story (and the gallery upstairs is on hand to provide any extra inspiration you might need).

There will be vintage stuff. Lots of vintage…
We’ll be focussing on using vintage print materials to create your collage skate deck, but there will also be lots of other materials on hand to ensure you can create the effects you want to achieve with your decks. We’ve shown you some of Twydall’s work here, but the possibilities (and style options!) are endless!

ALL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT WILL BE PROVIDED (Including a new, full-sized blank skateboard deck for each participant)

You’re welcome to bring your own ideas and source materials (if there’s something in particular you fancy doing) or just come as you are, and we’ll load you up with ideas and options on the night!

As this is a hands-on workshop with glue and other mucky things, you might want to wear things you don’t mind getting dirty!

Conclave presents

Deck The Halls
3rd – 11th December 2022

A Christmas show for people who don’t need more Christmas nonsense!

We’re super-excited to be hosting a special exhibition and mini-festival of events this December, celebrating the archetypal symbol of urban street and youth culture: THE SKATEBOARD.

This is no ordinary show of art on decks – we’ve thrown aside all the normal rules for decks being customised with urban street art, and opened up the platform to all our artists, so you’ll be seeing all sorts of styles, from painting and drawing, to screen-printing, carving, 3D modelling, collage, and – of course – the odd bit of spray-paint will be finding its way in there!

The group show features 40 original works from 20 of Conclave’s artists, including:
Barrie J Davies / Beav-Art / Cassette Lord / Daniel Mortimer Skinner / Dave Pop! / Emma Holmes / Godzuki / J David Bennett / Jarvis Weaver / John Lymer / Leo Kember / Michelle Mildenhall / Mypenleaks / Phil Lawson / Sfelez / Skatin Chinchilla / Tiffany Crisp / Twydall P / Vicky Gomez / Victoria Kaplan

Visit and get involved to inspire yourself / your kids / your inner kid / your ex-skateboarding self / your currently skateboarding-self…

YOU SEE IT

From spray-paint to sculpture, from collage to relief printing, there’s no limit to what our artists can do with their decks! A FREE exhibition of artworks will be running in our large basement exhibition space where you can feast your eyes on the creations of local artists in every medium you can imagine.

Some boards will be made to ride the streets, whereas some would test even the most experienced skater, but all of these will be looking great on our walls (or yours, if you can’t resist the urge to snap one up for your permanent enjoyment!)

The main exhibition will run from Saturday 3rd to Sunday 11th December,

EXHIBITION PREVIEW AND LAUNCH PARTY

DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS: Film Screening
Friday 9th December, 18:30-21:30 – FREE
This 2001 documentary film directed by Stacy Peralta explores the pioneering Zephyr skateboard team in the 1970s (of which Peralta was a member) and the evolving sport of skateboarding. Using a mix of film shot in the 1970s by Craig Stecyk of the Zephyr skateboard team (the Z-Boys of the title) alongside contemporary interviews, the documentary tells the story of a group of teenage surfer/skateboarders and their influence on the history of skateboarding culture. Winner of Best Director and Audience Choice awards at the Sundance Film Festival (amongst many others!)
More info here.

It’s all about getting involved, and with this in mind, we’re holding a number of hands-on workshop events where you can get involved (without the risk of a broken ankle!!)

WE COLLABORATE

Conclave Brighton is proud to be working with the teachers and young people at Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) on their project “Board with Art“. 20 students are working to create skateboard artworks which will be exhibited at their school, with a winner specially selected by Conclave to exhibit in our gallery exhibition.

As an independent gallery and events space, we strive to create an environment where everyone feels welcome: galleries are not just for those with money to burn, and a network of well-connected contacts! We want to celebrate art being for everyone, and that getting involved in creative activities will bring enrichment and benefits to everyone.

(Here’s hoping we get to see the work of the next generation’s Banksy!) 🎨
