CONCLAVE PRESENTS: Disorientation & [f]LOSS

Our final exhibition in the basement events space at Conclave Brighton’s Queens Road site.

DISORIENTATION & [f]LOSS:
A site-specific installation by Sukey Booth

This new immersive, site-specific (and time-specific) art installation contemplates issues of cultural identity and belonging in relation to location, migration, shared histories and circumstance.

Recognising the complex world where many of us (whether subconsciously, or otherwise) self-edit much of our messy social histories of heritage and identity, this work will seek to illustrate the intricacies of individuality that are collected together to make up our communities and networks.

Personal identity was never just one thing; a web of inter-locking stories, genetics, histories and influences come together in every human narrative. These tangled webs are made up of many strands: some with obvious beginning and end points, and some that unravel themselves into infinity…

In Disorientation & [f]loss, the artist invites us into a confusing world where we attempt to follow those different strands, where the start and end of linear narrative is unclear. Caught up in a mile of gold and red threads, the remnants and evidence of genetics, travel, experiences and memories reveal themselves to the viewer as they explore the space. We are invited to consider the different ways we transform, evolve and develop: be that physically – travelling over continents – or in time, circumstance and social identity.

The historical and nostalgic is grounded against the current day and current location through integral references to the space: sited in a Victorian building in central Brighton, this work tells multiple stories of circumstances and coincidence: “In the particular is contained the universal.” (James Joyce)

Comprising installation, sculptures, print, “reliquaries”, text and projection, the multi-channel nature of personal identity and experience is reflected in the physicality of this work, and as a farewell to this particular gallery space before its permanent closure on 16th September.

We’ll have oodles and oodles of vintage collage materials (helpfully sorted into categories so you can find what you need, when you need it! Ask for help, or just crack-on with it over a drink or two (yes, there’s a bar!  🍺🥂🍹) Come by yourself, or come with friends – we’ll all enjoy a good natter over the paper snipping 🙂

This workshop will provide a creative lovely break from all the Christmas eating and drinking – come in enjoy the escape from all the over-the-top Christmas themed stuff! (Although if you do need a Christmas excuse, this will be THE PLACE to make a bespoke present for someone special).

There are no rights or wrongs for this workshop – the only rule is to get involved and give it a go! Whether you’re a sticking pro, or a complete beginner, we’ll get you trying out different techniques, and thinking about how to use different types of source material to create the effects you’re after. Twydall will be helping you along with hints and tips to create a unique skate deck that tells a story (and the gallery upstairs is on hand to provide any extra inspiration you might need).

There will be vintage stuff. Lots of vintage…
We’ll be focussing on using vintage print materials to create your collage skate deck, but there will also be lots of other materials on hand to ensure you can create the effects you want to achieve with your decks. We’ve shown you some of Twydall’s work here, but the possibilities (and style options!) are endless!

ALL MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT WILL BE PROVIDED (Including a new, full-sized blank skateboard deck for each participant)

You’re welcome to bring your own ideas and source materials (if there’s something in particular you fancy doing) or just come as you are, and we’ll load you up with ideas and options on the night!

As this is a hands-on workshop with glue and other mucky things, you might want to wear things you don’t mind getting dirty!
