BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: The Bigger Boys

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: The Bigger Boys

THE BIGGER BOYS

Robin Hodges and Dom Kerridge work through their midlife crises live on stage.

In the words of the performers:

We fed an AI all of the Brighton Fringe listings from 2022, and this is what we got:

Robin Hodges is a human being. Dom Kerridge is also a human being. Sit and watch them make noises out of their face holes for around an hour. You shall also be invited to make different noises from your face holes, perhaps, what you call ‘laughing’. This is not a binding contract. We are not your real mums.

Dom Kerridge did not sign-off on this description, describing it as “unappealingly wacky promotional verbiage”.

Robin Hodges says “good seller, great communication, would buy from again A+++++”.

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: There’s Another Country

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: There's Another Country

Black Tiger Productions presents
THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY

A film by Martin Nichols (+Q&A)

“Climb aboard a Robin Reliant & join my dad & me, W. Shakespeare & Dr Freud on a mission to save the UK from itself – in Super 8!”

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: There's Another Country

A screening combined with a Q&A of a new movie by local filmmaker Martin Nichols. This deeply personal film looks at post-Brexit UK through the eyes of Martin’s father, Evan. He was a private in World War Two and enthusiastically voted for the transformational 1945 Labour government – a government that gave us the NHS, decent social housing and so much more. THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY asks a very simple question: what would Evan make of his country today?

Nichols’ multi-genre film uses both found and newly shot Super 8 footage – which replicates the visual ‘look’ of the post-war consensus. It weaves two huge social upheavals together: our present-day experience of the pandemic and his parents’ generation’s suffering in the war. In seeking to understand the roots of both his own family’s breakdown as well as recent political storms in the nation as a whole, THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY finally travels back in time to revisit Evan’s home town Senghenydd in South Wales. This was the site in 1913 of the biggest – and almost entirely forgotten – industrial disaster ever to happen in the UK.

What are the ghosts that haunt us? And how can we exorcise them? Can we find the confidence to build another country again, just as the Attlee government started to do in 1945? There will be a discussion after the screening in which we can hopefully sort everything out…

“Fantastic, a really clever collage of the personal and political, and the parallel narrative threads ran deep and hit home hard. An important and highly original film.” (Melita Dennett, Radio Reverb)

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Lewys Holt – Phrases

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Lewys Holt - Phrases

Phrases is a one-man dance, multimedia and spoken word performance. It is a minimal, reflective piece that continually shape-shifts between PowerPoint presentation, dance performance, stand-up set, private conversation, and storytelling recital.

Lewys Holt Phrases
Phrases exists in a kind of ethereal space. Projections of stream-of-consciousness writing are paired with often improvised movement and discussions of communication, to create a subtly humorous yet unnerving piece. Generally, the piece expresses some kind of solidarity with the anxious, the confused and those who overthink. It doesn’t even really tell anyone that it’s going to be okay – it just sort of says “I know…” and strokes your head, at the same time as having its own little freakout.

“Phrases is fun, eccentric and clever”

(Voice Magazine ★★★★)

“Unpretentious, honest and thought-provoking, Holt offers a wonderful study in overthinking.”
(Broadway Baby ★★★★)

Two more Fringes and a national comedy tour later, he gave up the day job at as an account manager at a marketing agency and ran away to drama school. BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Mindful Iris

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Mindful Iris

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Mindful Iris

The iris is a symbol of wisdom, hope, trust and valour. All good qualities to look for in a song.

Songs have been chosen for possible insights and advice about mental well-being. The overall message is uplifting – songwriters are constructive about your mental health!

We will sing and talk about songs encouraging supportive relationships, social physical activities, arts and craft and creative work, and music itself. We’ll ponder the benefits of smiling, singing, sisterly compassion, touch, knitting, walking, acceptance, connection, nurturing, painting, and dancing! It’s not an exhaustive list!

So, one hour of gentle acoustic music – just voice and guitar. A little talk about the poetry, wit and wisdom within the lyrics. No demands. You can just listen and enjoy. It should be an upbeat experience.

Any profits will go to the charity Mind www.mindcharity.co.uk

Mindful Iris is Anna (vocals) and Ian (acoustic guitar)
