BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: This is What the Menopause Looks Like

“This Is What The Menopause Looks Like” is an exhibition of portraits and interviews of 70 people from across the UK, funded by Arts Council England.

After experiencing a difficult menopause herself, artist Catrin Osborne travelled the UK meeting, interviewing, and photographing people going through menopause. This process culminates in an exhibition of photographs and interviews of a cross-section of people from diverse communities and backgrounds: the participants (of various different ethnicities, class, gender status, or disability status) all detailing their unique experiences.

Also featured is video art by Tindara Sidoti, including recordings of people in Thanet’s views on what the menopause looks like; and a video made in response to participants involved in the project.

At the private view there will be spoken word and comedy song performances by participants Karen Antoni and Carol Carter (Flick Ferdinando) about menopause.

A free writing workshop for those going through menopause will be run by local writer Maggi Winters.

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Lewys Holt – Phrases

Phrases is a one-man dance, multimedia and spoken word performance. It is a minimal, reflective piece that continually shape-shifts between PowerPoint presentation, dance performance, stand-up set, private conversation, and storytelling recital.

Lewys Holt Phrases
Phrases exists in a kind of ethereal space. Projections of stream-of-consciousness writing are paired with often improvised movement and discussions of communication, to create a subtly humorous yet unnerving piece. Generally, the piece expresses some kind of solidarity with the anxious, the confused and those who overthink. It doesn’t even really tell anyone that it’s going to be okay – it just sort of says “I know…” and strokes your head, at the same time as having its own little freakout.

“Phrases is fun, eccentric and clever”

(Voice Magazine ★★★★)

“Unpretentious, honest and thought-provoking, Holt offers a wonderful study in overthinking.”
(Broadway Baby ★★★★)

BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Moral Panic

Blue Dog Theatre presents MORAL PANIC
A play by Stuart Warwick

It’s 1984, and Charles Hawthorne is working as a film censor. It’s a turbulent time, with national hysteria around a gaggle of extreme horror films – branded the video nasties. Charles is taking it all in his stride though, and even sniffs a possible promotion. That is until there’s a new appointment at the board. An appointment of a female censor who turns Charles’ world upside down, and has murderous consequences….

About Julian Caddy:

Julian began his Fringe journey 25 years ago in Edinburgh, where he gained his first taste of both performing and producing. Two more Fringes and a national comedy tour later, he gave up the day job at as an account manager at a marketing agency and ran away to drama school. Upon graduating, he co-founded an Edinburgh Fringe venue, where he programmed more than seven hundred shows, including two summer seasons in London and helping to tour artists to the Fringes of Adelaide, Montreal and across the UK. He produced his first Brighton Fringe event in 2009 and has been in his current role since October 2011. Over his time at Brighton Fringe, the festival has more than doubled in audience numbers with a 40% increase in the number of events. He has worked to develop international links and has been on the awards jury of the National Arts Festival of South Africa and Amsterdam Fringe, as well as being a festival delegate at many festivals worldwide. BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Mindful Iris

The iris is a symbol of wisdom, hope, trust and valour. All good qualities to look for in a song.

Songs have been chosen for possible insights and advice about mental well-being. The overall message is uplifting – songwriters are constructive about your mental health!

We will sing and talk about songs encouraging supportive relationships, social physical activities, arts and craft and creative work, and music itself. We’ll ponder the benefits of smiling, singing, sisterly compassion, touch, knitting, walking, acceptance, connection, nurturing, painting, and dancing! It’s not an exhaustive list!

So, one hour of gentle acoustic music – just voice and guitar. A little talk about the poetry, wit and wisdom within the lyrics. No demands. You can just listen and enjoy. It should be an upbeat experience.

Any profits will go to the charity Mind www.mindcharity.co.uk

Mindful Iris is Anna (vocals) and Ian (acoustic guitar)
